Today, I was promoted to V.P. Two little letters—that's all it is. Yet they mean so much in the "company life". Here's my take. If you are self employed, or working in a boutique—titles can be pretty much meaningless. In fact, it would be great if we could do away with all titles and labels. Well, maybe and maybe not. The fact is that if you work for a company as I do—the likely reality is that a combination of structured hierarchy mixed with "flat" collaborative teams exists.
In the flat team scenario, title is much less important. Work happens in a more organic fashion. There may need to be team leads, and defined roles but titles should be less critical. However in the structured hierarchy—titles do come into play. So I'm taking this as a move to be more effective within the hierarchy part of the equation. It's a nod of confidence you might say. Now all I have to do meet the new challenges head on. Leadership isn't easy. Never was—and never will be.
