Meet Ed: Experience Diamond
Update: Check out this story about a little boy named "Eddie". Delightful.
Time to put some principles from Made to Stick into practice. Last year, I posted a visual of The Holy Trinity of Experience Design. I've been wanting to update this for a while. Basically it was inspired by Kevin Mullet's Essence of Rich Internet Applications with my own touches added to it. But it was missing a few things. Namely that the experiences we create need to stand the test of time, adapt and evolve. In other words—be sustainable (See Don Norman's comment on the trinity post). Also, while I like the idea and sound of the word Storytelling, I think what we're really doing is Storyswapping. So, I also made a change there to stress sharing.
But the reason why I reference Made to Stick is because I wanted a simple way to recall this. And since I envisioned it being a diamond vs. the original triangle—ED (Experience Diamond) was conceived.
So, meet Ed. Hope you make his acquaintance. (and hope I can too!)

And here I thought you were referencing Made to Stick because you were getting a dollar every time you mentioned it. You should really start negotiating a deal with them!
I like ED, I'm going to hang him in my office, next to the picture of my nephew in a tutu and his Batman mask.

Ha, Lyss!
Them Heath brothers are getting a good deal from me. I paid full price for the book and they get some publicity at no cost.
Glad you like ED and I'm sure he looks awesome next to Tutu Batman. :)

Your Experience Diamond tells me a story of the yellowish sun being super-hot and stimulating the senses, then a little boy Eddie creating a design based on blue water, then warmly and reddishly telling friends about the design, and then (environmentally?) reworking the design for posterity. To better remember your model, I wrote a "Little Eddie" story about it here. This is fun, thanks!

David,
I just finished Made to Stick, and I too, was inspired by it. I love your visual. May I borrow it?

Lewis,
Go ahead, and be sure to check out "Eddie's story". I just updated this post with a link.

David,
Could you spend a few sentences describing the links (e.g., usable, sustainable) between the circles (stimulate the senses) — so I can get a better understanding of what you're doing here.
(Jesus was crucified on the cross; looks like Ed is getting crucified on the diamond.)

I'd be interested to see one of your visuals or reading your thoughts about Why You Blog, since your day job probably keeps you very busy.
I tagged you here - http://www.averageidea.com/2007/02/20/the-essence-of-life-or-why-i-blog/

Roger, we don't want to to that to Ed (crucify him). I'll need to fix that. As for the the words linking, I'll come back to that with some rationale. Will take a little time, but in a nutshell, they are acting as the "glue" to each major component. The order of them can probably be fluid (if it were animated, the could travel along the lines)—but I put them in the places where it made most sense. Take a look at the Essence of link as well. There's a visual there from Mullet's presentation which has the descriptions hovering around his circles.
Jeff, see this.

Nice graphic. It really drives home the idea of sustainability. Thanks.

I like diamonds. Diamonds are forever. For someone who doesn't watch TV I sure do remember those taglines. It is because they are sticky?
I was playing with the word stick and came up with stuck -- that was after I read Roger's post at Creative Think "Tribute to Vowels". And thought on adding to the conversation on executing ideas for tomorrow's post.
As I wrote in another comment here, I received Made to Stick from Random House, but will be purchasing copies to give away -- it's been that good, especially after reading The Creative Habit and Juicing the Orange, which I will reference tomorrow.
The books all built nicely on each other -- just like a conversation among friends. Your diamond reminds me of Dan Pink's A Whole New Mind plus your thinking and flow. Dan talked about six "senses": design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning, which are crucial for success in the new conceptual age.
It would be interesting to take a brand through your diamond. In that case, I might "borrow" your graphic. Interesting question from Roger.
