Top 10 Signs You Might Be A "Weblebrity"

Social_systems

Andy Warhol's prophecy was fulfilled with the advent of MTV's programming and widespread reality television. We're now seeing a new kind of micro-fame which lasts well beyond 15 minutes. You don't have to have thousands of friends on My Space, Facebook or Twitter to feel like a "Weblebrity"—you can be the celebrity of your own social system regardless of size.  Here are the top 10 signs you just might be a Weblebrity. :-)

1. You have signature clothing such as a certain T-shirt, hat, tie, sunglasses, boas, and occasionally ascots.
2. At internet parties people follow a "drink for link" policy—they buy the drinks, you provide the links.
3. Your internet friends treat you like a star while your real friends tell you to go F@*k yourself.
4. You stopped thinking about yourself as a person years ago.  Now you're a "brand".
5. At family gatherings you receive regular taunts like "can the internet superstar please pass the casserole??".
6. You've considered getting your Facebook photo shot professionally.
7. Total strangers you meet at conferences know more about you than your significant other.
8. You fight back the urge to say "do you know who I am?" almost daily.
9. People actually think you're friends with Scoble.
10. No-one in the real world has ever heard of you.

» The Curse of Weblebrity from Servant of Chaos
You know him. You have seen him across the crowded conference room floor. He looks just like he does online, except perhaps, more real. Slightly older. Shorter. Younger than you expected. Taller. His voice is familiar, comfortable. After all, you [Read More]

You had me pegged until #9. NOBODY thinks I am friends with Scoble. ;)

I love #3. Hilarious.

You mean, i can get free drinks out of this?

Do I have signature clothing?

Number 4 would be me! Brand you/me!

Its obvious I am a Lusr, I am not even going to claim 3 out of 10, WTF is a scobeliser?

Drink for a link policy - brilliant, at a recent event in Cape Town, I told all the bloggerati that if I'm buying drinks, they're giving backlinks!

I think I'm doing this wrong. I am friends with Scoble...but I've never done No 2. drinks for links...mmmm. I've just offered a free rant for a glass of champagne!

I might need a tee shirt of this. As it stands, I'm going to make a "Do you KNOW who I AM?" shirt. : )

I have considered #6 but that's just because I am way too vain...

If anyone wants a profile pic shot, gimme a call.. mwa ha haaaa

s

Number 2 is about to save me around $500/week. Thanks DA ;)

The #10 is the great risk of "living in Internet". But it's so great to have a blog

Hey Armanz - Go f@*k yourself, now go buy me a beer.

;-)

Hope all is well!

Sad to say, but I match a good 7 of these :-\

Well, #10 certainly hit home.

I would likely buy a "Do You Know Who I Am??" shirt.

I would also add that you have to at least have one internet stalker who comments every time you Tweet or change your FB status. That's when you've "made it..."

LOL, ah Jason, great comment (and nickname reference). You win a "Do You Know Who I Am?" T-shirt. ;-)

I am the enigma #10.

Brilliant. #3, my man, is the secret sauce. That's when you know you are getting big britches.

I'm not even close. Nobody on the web knows who I am either. Most of my real friends don't care. We can have clothing? Cool!

I'll take one of Chris' shirts, and Esther's comment is helping me look forward to the stalkers. lol

Too funny!

this is a hilarious post! i'm not a weblebrity yet, but i sure spend enough hours online to piss a few people off!

This one really hit home. One thing I've noticed: Among my 100 or so Facebook friends, there's not one person who came to my wedding, and only one or two who have ever stepped in my house. Brandbuilding and friendship don't necessarily converge.

I know Scoble. He's a good friend of mine. You, sir, are no Robert Scoble....

(*NOTE* I really don't know Robert Scoble. Maybe someday...)

Money quote: "Your internet friends treat you like a star while your real friends tell you to go F@*k yourself."

"You, sir, are no Robert Scoble...."

Is this an insult or compliment? ;-)

Nice post but I got distracted by your new giant Friendfeed emblem, guess you're making your way down that list ;)

ok David, I have to ask....did you have your new FB photo professionally shot ;)?

Geekazine: what's your Twitter or FriendFeed address? I'd like to get to know you too. After all, if you're a friend of David's then you are pretty damn cool.

marianne, it depends on how you look at it. If you can count an iPhone photo taken by a half baked groomsman as professional, then yes. It's a professional shot. :-)

Really nice post, never thinking about this..

Very amusing...

I already started using "Don't you know who I am?" on my blog. I think this kind of affected arrogance only adds to my mystique. I guess time (and stats) will tell.

It's now called 15 megs of fame :)

At family gatherings they introduce you as, "This is David, he's in computers..."

Later on, when someone asks what you do, you say...

"I'm in computers"

Hahahaha! Written like a true weblebrity.

I thought of someone in almost ever example. LOL You mean your not best friends with Scoble? :) Nice list!

You know I'll always love your stuff...but remind me to reuse this as the classic bad example of vendors who always see themselves as the center of the universe!

I. Am. Guilty. Not going to mention which ones. *sigh*

I'm disturbed by how closely I match your descriptions here. Truly, truly disturbed.

David - too funny! too true! ... too scary.

I'm still sticking to the term "cewebrity" over "webrebrabrity" or whatever you said up there! Not that I'm either... ;)

Do kick-ass red cowboy boots count? too funny david, love it! by the way - My family and RL friends don't even read my Twitter. and I like it that way! :)

Loved the "Drinks for links". I definitely qualify for 3, 5 and 10 :)

Shashi. B

This post is amazingly sad and true! For some people.

What a delightful way to start the morning.

What real life friends? They're all long gone. But I did get a love letter with a picture a few days ago. From a 55 year old MALE! Great ...

I resemble that remark, David! And just for the record, I have packed a brand new ascot for tomorrow's presentation in Birmingham.

Thats why it's important to talk to people other than on the web. Haha, I try.

Beautiful finale.
